With some barbershops and salons in Australia closing their doors due to COVID-19 and some customers not wanting to visit their barbershops just yet even if they are open, it is important to ensure you keep your hair healthy and maintained whilst you are not getting it cut.
In this edition of #BarberTalk by New York Barbers, we are going to run through how to keep your hair healthy and in good shape at home.
KEEPING THINGS CLEAN
A very important part of a home hair care routine is to simply keep it clean!
We recommend washing your hair every 2nd day or you could do it every 3rd day if your hair doesn’t get too dirty from sweat or product usage.
Should I wash my hair every day?
Usually, we don’t recommend washing every single day. The reason why is that by washing your hair every single day, you are stripping it of its natural oils. These oils help to keep your scalp healthy and your hair moisturized.
If you are stripping away these oils every day, over time your hair can become quite dry and brittle, which also makes it harder to style as well!
However, too much of these oils is what will cause your hair to become oily/greasy and smell, which is the result of not washing often enough. Hence why keeping it between every 2-3 days is the sweet spot for most.
What about when I sweat from exercising each day?
This is a common thought that leads many to feel the need to wash their hair after every workout. While this would make sense, if this means you are washing your hair every day, you are still subject to the same effects of stripping your hair of its natural oils and nutrients, leading to dry and brittle hair.
Sweat is made almost completely of water, with small amounts of other chemicals like ammonia, urea, salts, and sugar. Rinsing your hair with water will rinse this out. This means you don’t have to wash your hair every day if you are exercising every day and your hair will stay healthy!
Using The Right Shampoo
At New York Barbers, we use the Blends of Many Shampoos from Alfaparf Milano for a more specialised treatment to the scalp and hair.
There are two different shampoos in the range:
This a gentle rebalancing shampoo suitable for most hair types. It cleanses the scalp deep down, treating any dandruff and excess sebum (oil). It is Sulfate Free, meaning the shampoo doesn’t create a huge lather, resulting in less of your hair’s natural oils and nutrients being stripped away when washing.
The Rebalancing Shampoo contains the Double Reset System. Which is the perfect blend of anti-microbial, biotechnological ingredients including B group vitamins and amino acids.
This is a unique blend that acts to regulate hyperactivity of sebaceous glands, which is the cause of dandruff and an oily scalp.
Gentle energizing shampoo. Cleanses the scalp deep down and revitalises the hair.
We recommend this shampoo for thin/thinning hair to energize the scalp to aid in thickening the hair that is present.
The Energizing Shampoo contains a concentrated mix of marine microalga proven to stimulate the hair follicles, that extend the hair's growth phase and slows down the thinning process, leaving the hair thick and strong.
In between shampoos:
A great product that we recommend for use in between washes to keep your hair fresh is the Rebalancing Tonic from the Blends of Many Range.
The Rebalancing Tonic is a leave-in tonic that restores and rebalances, returning the scalp to optimum conditions giving an amazing scent to the scalp and hair.
This is perfect to use on the days you don’t wash your hair. It will keep your scalp fresh and smelling good!

If you need to use styling products, less is more! Too much product build up in your hair will make it difficult to keep clean and healthy using the methods and products we spoke about earlier.
That is why it is extremely beneficial to use a water-soluble product. This means the product will break down and dissolve with water, so you don’t have to shampoo your hair every time just to get the product out, and you won’t accumulate a nasty build-up of product in your hair & scalp!
We use and recommend the 18.21 Man Made Styling Product Range. 3/4 of their hair styling products are water-soluble which is a super bonus for your hair as we mentioned above. Not only this, but they are a best seller credit to their signature masculine Sweet Tobacco fragrance will leave your hair smelling great all day!

Lastly, haircuts! Whilst we are open for business here at New York Barbers in Berwick, VIC and following the necessary precautions to ensure our customer's wellbeing, we understand that some customers would prefer to wait until they are more comfortable with the current events surrounding COVID-19 to settle down before they pop in for a cut.
This is a perfect time to let your hair grow out a little into a different hairstyle and change things up. Grow out that part line or undercut for a more blended look, grow out that skin fade so you get a different type of fade next haircut that will last you longer – there are so many options!
